The Dabba Mixup

Project Overview

Mumbai runs on its Dabbawalas. The small army of lunchbox couriers who somehow deliver thousands of home-cooked meals across the city every single day without a single tracking app. There's something inherently story-shaped about a system that precise, so I built a short story around the one thing that could throw it off: a mix-up.

The Story

A corporate office lady and a humble Dabbawala get their lunchboxes swapped on an ordinary, chaotic workday. What starts as a small inconvenience turns into a chase across the city, dodging traffic, weaving through crowded streets, and getting fully swallowed by the beautiful disorder that is Mumbai.

Somewhere in that chase, the two strangers stop being strangers. By the time they finally track down their lunchboxes on the quiet shores of Marine Lines, the food almost feels beside the point. They sit down, share the meal anyway, and share a laugh over the fact that the mix-up gave them something a lot better than a correctly delivered lunch: a friendship neither of them expected.

The Making Of

The city itself needed to feel like a character here, not just a backdrop. Mumbai's energy, its density, the specific chaos of its streets, all had to come through visually for the chase to feel earned. That meant thinking through the story less as a single illustration and more as a sequence: the mix-up, the pursuit, and the quiet payoff at Marine Lines, each needing its own mood while still feeling like one continuous day.

A lot of the work went into making the two leads read as believably different. One used to the rhythm of office life, the other moving through the city like he owns every street corner, so that their eventual bond felt like an actual contrast closing, not two generic characters thrown together.

Final Outcome

The Dabba Mixup turned a very Mumbai-specific detail. A system famous for its precision, into a story about the value of things going wrong. It's a small, warm story wrapped in a very busy, very loud city, and that contrast is really the heart of the piece.
